Hello,
Since some time I've been wondering why It is like that:
I'm within small LAN consist of 3 computers:
1 x Win 98
1 x Win 2000
1 x Win XP
and I'm sharing (Win 2000) some folders on my computer e.g 'docs'
I'm using Win2k. I activated 'guest' account ,with pass e.g. 'xxx', to
enable others to log on to my computer using this account. What I found
quite strange is that:
my friend using Win98 can access my computer with no problems, no matter
what user he put while Win98 start. He has only to put pass 'xxx' when
prompted, so:
if he put 'johny' or 'claudia' or whatever as Client of MicrosoftNetw... he
can access my shared folder prividing pass 'xxx' when asked
(I wrote about login name which is prompted while Win98 starts and connect
to MicrosNetw becouse when he try to access my shared folder he is only
asked about pass, not login)
whereas
my friend using Win XP can not access my shared folders regardless which
login with 'xxx' password he put, I mean:
if he put 'baby' or whatever and 'xxx' pass, he can not access my shared
folders
....
when my third friend comes with his laptop (Win2000) and try to access my
folders there are also no problems. When prompted for login and pass he can
put:
login: whatever
pass: mmxmmx
and is able to access my shared folders
Why is that ?
Should my friend using WinXP be logged in (on his local WinXP) as a guest
to access my shared folders ?
or
login name (on local machine) has nothing to do with that and password is
the only important thing ?
Why password 'xxx' when trying to access my folders is wrong only when
using XP ? and is OK when using Win2000 and Win98 ?
Thank you for help in advance. Krzysztof
