Sharing folders -- Read-only on drive, read/write on ONE folder.

I'm trying to set up folder sharing in XP Pro to work as follows: I'd like
READ access for the entire drive (including future folders I create) but I'd
like READ/WRITE access for a specific folder. When I try to set it up this
way, the "read-only" access that is set up on the root overrides the
"read/write" access I set up on one of the sub folders. Is there a way to
set it up so that only one folder allows read/write access over the network,
but the rest of the drive still allows read-only access?

Thanks,

Larry

In the properties for the folder, security tab, make sure the "Allow
Inheritable Permissions..." checkbox is unchecked. Then you should be
able to set security on this folder independent of the parent folder.

P.S. Typically you grant EVERYONE full control (share pernission) and use
folder and file permissions (security) to restrict.

I'm not sure I understand how this is working. When I look at the
permissions in the security tab, it already has "write" permission "allowed"
even though I only have "read" permission checked on the share tab. I get
the impression that we're talking about two different things here. I want
to be able to read the entire drive and any new folders that are made on
this drive, but I want one specific folder to allow write permission as
well. Given that "write" permission is already allowed on the security
page, I don't understand what I'm supposed to change.

Thanks again,

Larry

The way I do it is to allow both read and write in the "share"
configuration, then put more restrictive access (read only) in the
security tab for folder permissions and allow inheritance except where
I desire public read/write access -- in which case I break the
inheritance and set up the security as I need it. That way I can
configure it for read-write everywhere for me and read-only for
everyone else. I believe the more restrictive of the two securities
(share vs security tab) wins out.
