Sharing Folders etc

G

Guest

Making progress with my network which is connecting my laptop and desktop via
a crossed RJ45 cable, both using Windows XP. The host is the laptop which
is connected to the internet.

From my desktop I can see all the folders marked for sharing but from the
laptop I can only see Shared Folders and none of the other folders. I
thought once they were marked fro sharing then folders on my desktop should
be accessible from the laptop. Any ideas please?

Terry,

Once you get physical connectivity working, you can still have problems. Start
by looking for a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Please identify each computer as XP
Home, XP Pro with Simple File Sharing, or XP Pro with Advanced File Sharing?

thanks chuck and that is a lot of information thanks. I am not extremely
literate as far as computers are concerned but I have downloaded browstat and
can get the status from the command. However, that results in many lines of
type and back to basics, I cannot copy the information to send in a file.
The same applies to ipconfig /all. Is there an easy way to save this info
please?

Thanks for your help which I appreciate.

Best Regards,

Terry,

Here's an example, using "ipconfig /all" (also needed here):
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html#Redirected>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html#Redirected
Redirected Output
By redirecting the output, you can view it and / or copy it in a more convenient
way, so it's suitable for posting online. Instead of typing
ipconfig /all
type
ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt

With the latter command, instead of getting the ipconfig output there in the
command window, all you'll see in the command window is another "C:\>". Then,
type
notepad c:\ipconfig.txt
and Notepad will open with the ipconfig output in a more viewable, and copyable,
format.

I'll be patient with you, and you be patient with me.

Hi Terry,

OK, this is a great start. Terry is running both IPV6 (aka Automatic / Teredo
Tunneling, aka Microsoft IP V6), and IPX/SPX. Both IPV6 and IPX/SPX are known
problem causes here. Please remove both, and restart Terry. Wait for an hour,
then repeat your observations.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

If problems continue, post updated "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from
both computers.

And Terry, please reply after my replies. Much better for both of us here.

Hi Chuck,

I unticked the two programs in Local area connection 4 properties and left
for an hour. I rebooted both and took the browstat and ipconfigall files
which follow. One thing which may say something is that when I copy a new
file to the Shared folders folder on the desktop, it is visiable from the
Laptop whereas no new folders are. Anyway, herewith stats:

Hi Terry,

Terry still has IPV6. Is there a problem removing it?
Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling

Inconsistent access / visibility we'll tackle last. First, straighten out the
protocol issue.

Hi Chuck,
In the Local Area connection Properties box I removed the tick from TCP/IP
Version 6 And the IPX/SPX box. According to the wording at the top of the
box the connection Does not use these items.

Should I uninstall TCP/IP version 6 instead of just removing the tick?

Thanks again

Terry

Terry,

In cases like yours, un installation is probably going to be more effective than
de activation. Since you appear to still have problems, let's try that next.

Terry,

I get confused - is Terry the Host or the Client?

If the Host, does Terry have Internet service still? If the Client, why does
Terry have all of these adapters?

Now to my previous message not being there. One of the problems here is that
you have a signature setup. The signature is being posted at the top of your
message, and most news clients drop everything below the line starting with "--
" on any subsequent replies.

You need to configure your signature properly, so it doesn't post at the top and
make everything below it disappear.

Note my signature below.
