I have shared a folder on an XP machine which contains an Access Database
that I'm trying to use on a Vista machine but it won;t let me access it.
When I set the share I gave everyone full permissions. What else do I have
to do to satisfy Vista?

Thanks,

Vic

If you're not using "easy" sharing then you'll also need to give
everyone permissions using the security tab, or enable
password-protection.

everyone permissions using the security tab,

Jimmy - What is "easy" sharing?

"Simple file sharing" is the file sharing mode that defaults in
Windows XP Home (nor sure if it defaults in XP Pro).

Since you are getting access denied while attempting to access your XP
machine, the problem is most likely on your XP machine, not your Vista
machine.

If you see both a Sharing tab and a Security tab on your Windows XP
machine in the file properies screen, and the sharing tab includes
buttons that say "Permissions" and "Caching", you are using advanced
sharing.

With advanced sharing turned on, you need to deal with both share
permissions AND security permissions.

Share permissions do not actually ASSIGN permissions - they simply
specify that MAXIUMUM amount of permission someone accessing the share
can obtain over files while accessing that share.

Securtity permissions via the Security tab actually assigns
permissions to the files/folders - these are what really count. If
someone doesn't have access to a folder via the security tab, it
doesn't matter what the share permissions say.

ALso note that If you do not enter your Windows XP username and
password when connecting to your XP machine from your Vista machine
(and your username and password are different between your XP and
Vista machines), Windows XP doesn't know who you are and knows you
only as a "guest" or "everyone" as opposed to your username.

This means that in this case, you will only be able to access
files/folders that list "everyone" as having the desired access on
their security tab.

You can turn on simple sharing in XP from any explorer window by
clicking tools -> folder options -> View tab - > and checking "Use
simple file sharing (Recommended)"

With simple file sharing, Windows XP takes care of both the sharing
and security permissions for you - you just specify whether you want
people accessing your share to be able to modify files or not.

<snip>

FYI, in XP Pro, the default is to use simple files haring.

I thought so, but I wasn't sure... I just kind of blew through those
dialogs until my sorely missed security tab reappeared :)
