Hi all,
I am trying to share data folders and locally connected printers
to my workgroup. I have read the help files, and can't make
heads or tails out of it.

I have these accounts on this machine:
administrators
guest (disabled)
Stephan

This machine is connected to a LAN
with a server providing access to the internet.
other users on the LAN can see this machine,
but are asked for a password to see anything about it.

what do I need to do?

thanks
Stephan

Grant Stephan permission to use the shared folder. Log on to the "other"
computer as Stephan and connect.
or
Set up a user on the computer doing the sharing using the same username and
password used to log into the "other" computer. Grant that user proper
permissions to the shared folder. Log on to the "other" computer as that
user and connect to the shared folder.

Not sure if I read that correctly, but neither option will work. First, you
cannot log into PC#2 with the account that resides on PC#1. If you did set
similar accounts up on both systems (a security no-no) logging into the
systems w/the account used on the first system will not establish a
persistent connection to the resources under other user accounts. In a
workgroup environment like this there is no getting around using a
username/password for an account given rights to the resource unless you want
to throw security out the window and open it up to Everyone (not recommended
even w/the best of intentions).

If you do not want to use a username/password for the shared resources then
bite the bullet and setup a small domain. That is the primary reason it's
there.

I believe you are mistaken in saying that using common accounts on two
computers is a "security no-no". In fact, this is the secure way to share
resources in a non-domain environment. The other possible route, enabling
guest access, is far riskier than common logon accounts.

I tried that (i think) and still people couldn't get on to my system.

I will look for methods of doing this, but would appreciate any
references you have

My system is on a LAN in a company, we have a server
providing a gateway/firewall to the internet and handling
email. we are all on the same workgroup. Most of the
machines are running win98se, some are running win2k
