I have worked on this prolbem for days with no success. This is the
situation.
I have two laptops running Windows XP Professional service pack 2.
I have "simple file sharing" set on in both computers.
I have the "C" drive selected for Network sharing in both computers.
I have checked "Allow network users to change my files" in both computers
I can see and I can access the C drives on both computers
I can see each others all files and folders on both computers
I can access all files and folders on ONE computer but can only access some
files and folders on the other computer
When access isn't successful I get the following message:

File xxx is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator. Access is denied.

In some instances when I doubleclick the file on the other computer,
Microsoft Word opens but the file doesn't open. It says access is denied.

I have tried numerous solutions recommended by Microsoft Knowledge database
with no success. Please help

Since you can access some of the files on the troubled laptop but not
others, you know it has to be a permissions problem and not a
networking issue. Since I don't know what "tried numerous solutions
recommended..." entailed, I can't comment on that.

Things to check, making one change at a time and testing after each
change:

1. I frankly think Simple Sharing is a PITA and a waste of time. Since
you have XP Pro on both machines, I would disable Simple Sharing and
create identical user accounts/passwords on both machines.

2. Are these only MS Word documents that give the error message? Is the
file open on the other machine? That would cause a problem. If the
issue is only with MS Word documents, are the documents
password-protected? Encrypted? If the files are all MS Word documents,
post in a Word-specific newsgroup. Make sure you include your Office
version and an exact description of what you are doing and the error
message text. Here is a list of all the MS newsgroups so you can find
the Word one(s): http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

3. If these aren't only MS Word documents, try the suggestions in #1
above. Then right-click on one of the problem files and look at the
permissions. You might want to add the Everyone group to be able to
read/write.

I found tha same problem when I tried to set up a sharing network. The
problem was Norton security does notallow any communication between
computers. If you have a firewall installed on the computer disable it for a
short period and the Windows XP fire wall should give you some protection.
What I did was disconnect the DSL modem and turn off Norton security for a
the intervuld. Most prbably it is a firewall that is blocking file sharing
etc.

Thanks for hanging in with me on this problem. I will try to give as much
information to both replies. First of all the things I tried Unsuccessfully
did not deal at all with Permissions since I don't know how to do that. So if
you can tell me how to check or change permissions that would be helpful.
Next with regard to what luckey01 said, my problem is not a general file
sharing problem but a file specific problem and YES it does seem like it is
localized to WORD documents. I won't be able to prove it until I return
home, I am currently working out of town.

Since this problem is with Word documents, post to one of the Word
newsgroups since the Word experts there will be able to help you.
Again, here is the link to a list of all the MS newsgroups:
