i have just installed a router that now allows me access

what do i need to do to XP to allow such?
This Q is A'd very frequently in this NG; you could get your help by
googling this NG. Sigh. But, here's a short list:
1. Disable ICF on both PCs; later, get some other firewall software.
2. Junk NetBEUI and IPX/SPX and ICS on both PCs.
3. Enable TCP/IP and NetBIOS over TCP/IP
4. Enable DHCP server on the router, and set both PCs to be DHCP clients.
5. Uninstall all firewall and AV software (temporarily).
6. Run XP's Network Wizard, and tell it you have a Residential Gateway.
7. Pick a non-root folder with a short simple foldername and share it
with a short simple sharename. Get file sharing working before
trying printer sharing, since file sharing has a higher probability
of success.
There are lebenty-leben ways to screw up a Windoes network, so don't
give up if you don't initially succeed.
