How do you share files between 2 computers? (windows XP and
Windows 98)

Thank you for your help.

I have the same problem.

Our small business is running a three-comp network, and
have been for at least three years now. We have bought a
new system with WinXP. I have plugged in the ethernet
card, and have internet on the new system...however, it
cannot see or be seen by the other computers on the
system. (a real problem as this is to be the new
server). The other two computers continue to be able to
communicate with each other without difficulty.

I have enabled file-sharing as described (badly) in the
help files. I have enabled IPX, as the Network Setup
Wizard as demanded I do, and made sure the IPX protocol
is on the other two machines. I have made sure shared
resources are available on the other two computers, and
the new one. I have disabled ICF. (I can't figure out
how to disable ICS or even figure out if its on -
Microsoft obviously has chimps running is help file
department)

I KNOW there is nothing wrong with this computer. What
the hell is there that I'm missing? I would appreciate
any help.

Further to my last, I have tried searching the first 100
pages of this forum, and found at least one post on every
single page regarding this problem. I cannot believe it
has not been addressed. I have searched the MS
Knowledgebase, to no avail. There are obviously no MS
people monitoring any of these forums.

I have pinged the other computers on my network without
error.

This is driving me nuts.

There are several ways to do this, all involve connecting the two computers
in some way (direct NIC to NIC, DCC, HUB, Switch, Router). Then once the
computers are connected physically, ensure file and printer sharing is
installed and configured on each computer. Then share at least one folder
on each computer.

I suggest you read some basic setup sites such as:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com
http://www.wown.com
http://www.homenethelp.com

The process is relatively simple but requires several steps. Don't get
frustrated and follow the directions.

It won't do you any good to critisize those trying to help on this
voluntary newsgroup. Sharing files is a basic network operation and there
are several thousand sites that provide detailed instructions.

Did you install and configure file and print sharing? Dis you share
anything? Dis you turn off all firewalls during test? Have you confirmed
that all computers are in the same workgroup, subnet?

I'm willing to help you out. As a forewarning, it is
very frustrating sometimes to set up home networking,
i.e. sharing files is part of it. It takes patience.
If you could let me know more about how your computers
are set up, e.g. wireless, hardwire, and we can go from
there.

Both of my computers are on a wireless router (Lynksys
2.4GHz) I hope that helps...... Thank you.
