Sharing Files problems between 2 XP systems

Hi all,

Got a problem I wanted to see if anyone else has came
across before and maybe knows how to combat it.....

I have been working on two XP systems coneccted using an
RJ45 cable but with no Hub. One of the systems is almost
brand new and the other had been re-formatted today and XP
installed for the first time.

I can get both systems to recognise each other without too
much trouble and I have selected to share all the 'C'
drive and other folders on each one. The problem is
initially that it will not allow me to share
the 'documents and settings' program files' or 'windows
system files' on either system. When I looked into this
on the help and support it says "The sharing option is not
available for the document and settings, program files,
and Windows system folders. In addition, you cannot share
folders in other user's profiles'.

What I can't grasp is at home I have 3 systems (an XP, ME
and '98) all networked together using the same RJ45 cable,
the same network settings but with a Hub and I can share
any file I like with any system.

I have treid to maually go into each file in the program
folders and right-click and then share and it still will
not let me. Any ideas anybody?

Secondly, if I try to set the network up to share one
Internet connection (dial up), not only does the computer
with the connection continually try to dial in but I loose
any file sharing options I had. I have tried to tell the
systems to not auto sync with the Internet clocks but it
makes no difference. I ended up changing the network back
to not sharing an Internet connection to stop this. Any
ideas on that one?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

Have you tried to create both user accounts with same passwords and enough
rights to both comps?

Ive read that if the drive is partitioned using NTFS and simple file sharing
is enabled then you can't share these folders.
Check the "working" xp machine and see if that one's using FAT rather than
NTFS.

Do you mean that the pc continually tries to dial out? Using ipconfig /all
or winipcfg, make sure that each pc is only attempting to contact the
gateway IP address for DNS services. Check each pc for individual auto
updates on various pieces of software. Run a network monitor/logger to check
what fires off the connection and where it's trying to connect to, there
should be some freeware out there to do this.

Nope, sorry

This is set by design, that you cannot share these folders directly, but you should be able to share the subfolders in the folders that you you mentioned.

From MS Knowledge Base:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../proddocs/en-us/windows_shared_documents.mspx

Under the Notes section of: To share a drive or folder on the network

Note

. The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings, Program Files, and WINDOWS system folders. In addition, you cannot share folders in other user's profiles

Neither comp has any passwords, both log straight in and
the share level is the max it can be as far as I am aware.

Thanks for the reply,

Both systems are NTFS for definate but you mention simple
file sharing.

Do you have any ideas on how to check for that option?

Thanks
