I have a 2 computers both running XP Pro. They both connect to the internet
via a router and a DSL modem. I'd also like to view/amend files on the
Desktop from the laptop. Both machines are setup to use a workgroup but when
trying to map a drive I can't see the other machine.
I can ping the desktop from the laptop and both machines can get to the web
ok.I'm running Norton 2003 Intrenet security and have added rules to permit
the machines IP addresses through the firewall.
I've also ensured Computer services is running on both machines

Any ideas?

Have you set any of the directories/folders on either PC as shared?
Right click on the folder, select Sharing and Security, click the Share this
Folder radio button.

Val - yeah - the whole damn computer is set to be shared!!
I'm getting frustrated with it now!

Even though your local disk is "set to be shared" that does not and will not
automagically set all subfolders to a shared status. The drive and any
folders therein must have sharing enabled on a folder-by-folder basis.
Otherwise one would be unable to maintain security and privacy on sensitive
and/or personal data. It is a bit of a pain but once set you're done, at
least until you add more shared folders.
