Sharing Data and entering data

I must be confused
after going through all the steps which have taken a week to figure out - it
shares but only the original database owner can edit the data - when I try
to make a change from a machine that has permission to share - it gave me an
error that it could not find the SQL server - now when I do it - it works -
has anyone had this issue before?
 
The PC with the shared database must be up and running anytime BCM on
another PC tries to access the database.
 
The two machines were sitting right next to each other and I could see the
database open on the XP laptop - but the Win2K machine was having trouble
connecting
I restarted the machine and actually had to choose the database again - then
it worked but I hope that is not an indicator of what other users might
experience - it should be much simpler than that - shouldn't it?
