Sharing Contacts between Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003

Our company uses Exchange and a mixed group of Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007
users.

How can I share a Contacts folder that is not my main Contacts folder?

If I create a subfolder and send a Share Invitation to an Outlook 2003 user
they are unable to open the Contacts folder regardless of what permissions I
provide them (even Owner persmissions). They can see the folder but cannot
see the contacts. See KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/237825/en-us

We followed the instructions to no avail.

So then I tried to create a shared contacts folder in Windows Sharepoint
Services 2.0. Well, it seems that I am unable to import contact into WSS
2.0. I can link to the contacts folder but I would have to enter all of the
contacts manually.

So, my question is: What is the best way to share a contact list between
Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003 users? A list where either type of user can
view, add, modify etc.

Outlook 2003 users cannot take advantage of the easier sharing mechanism in
Outlook 2003. They will need to add your mailbox to their profile as a
secondary mailbox, as described in the KB article. And as the KB article
says, this means that you need to grant Folder Visible permission to the
mailbox root. What the article fails to say is that you also must grant
Folder Visible permissionto your Contacts folder and to any folders in the
hierarchy between the Contacts folder and the subfolder. That's in addition
to the permissions you've already granted on the subfolder itself.

Thanks for your quick response. That's an amazing shortcoming.

So, if I create a new root Contacts folder with a different name, how do I
"mark" it as my main Outlook Address Book. I guess it might be easier to
move all of my contacts to another folder named "Other Contacts", leave the
contacts I want to share in "Contacts" and then share it. Does that make
sense?

How about the Sharepoint Services angle. is there no work-around there?

Nick

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean by "a new root Contacts folder."

The procedure for adding a contacts folder to the address book is the same
for any such folder: On the folder's Properties dialog, switch to the
Outlook Address Book tab, and check the box there.

You're thinking about Sharepoint as a workaround for what?

Dian, I am using WSS 2.0 with Outlook 2007. It is impossible to import
contacts. You can link the folder but not import. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919551

Any other ideas?

And when I say "Root" contacts folder I just mean a new Contacts folder that
is at the same level as the default Contacts folder..meaning not a sub-folder
of Contacts.

Thanks,

Nick

I don't see anything in Diane's suggestion about importing. Did you try her
solution -- link the folder, then copy or move the contacts into it? You
will need to do that from an Outlook 2007 machine, because Outlook 2003
can't create contacts in a Sharepoint proxy folder (which might negate it as
a solution for you).

And did you try the approach I suggested, which has been used for years, up
until Outlook 2007 made sharing easier?

And what about an Exchange public folder with appropriate permissions?

You need to link the folder and copy the contacts to the linked sharepoint
folder.

I can only view what I have added to the Sharepoint Contacts folder from

I will also try the other suggestions again.

Are you trying it from Outlook 2007 or 2003? It is only read/write from
2007. Or your version of WSS is always read only. My version is read/write
in Outlook 2007 (but not in 2003) but I'm not sure which it is - I believe
it’s the newest publicly available.

I was able to update a sharepoint contact list by importing the contact list from sharepoint into Outlook.
I used the folder view in outlook to open my contacts and select the ones I needed to add. Then I just did a "drag and drop" to move the selected contacts from outlook into the sharepoint contact folder.
