Now I've resolved all my networking problems, can I write files from my
laptop directly to the CD writer on my desktop over the network?

Phil

Unfortunately, I think the answer is no. I hope I'm wrong, because
this would be a great feature in my home network. As far as I've been
told, the same applies to DVD players. you can't watch a DVD over the
network.

Hmmm.. are you sure? I can certainly watch video files on my laptop from my
main machine. Must admit I've never tried DVD tho'

Yes, you can. However, it will cause some problems with
network overhead and throughput... its kinda of like how,
technically, you could watch a DVD from another
computer's drive, but there's just way to much data for
A. Slower networks
B. Slower servers (If there is a server between you and
the example DVD/Cd-Rw computer)
C. Slower individual computers, because it will take more
processing power than you may have to read from your Hard
Disk, buffer that through memory, send it out to the
other computer, have it process that data, put it to ram,
then save it to a CD-R.

THE EASIEST WAY TO USE THE OTHER COMPUTERS CD-RW DRIVE is
to get a nice, easy program like Ahead Nero on your
laptop. From there, you can write an ISO file that
contains all the information for the CD. Then, you can
place that ISO file on the network and get on your other
computer and burn it from there.
So yes, you can edit and make your CD on your laptop
while your traveling, and burn it while your networked!
