Sharing Calendars without Exchange

G

Guest

Hi - I work in a small office enviornment with 5 PC's using Outlook2003. We
are trying to work out a way to share our calendars , online in real time
using outlook. We were directed to the internet free/busy feature in outlook
which 'appears' to be exactly what we need.

I am having a few troubles trying to configure it however. We have our own
win2003 server which we can use to upload our vfb files to however we cant
seem to find out how to configure the system and get it going? Does anyone
know if you need to have exchange installed? We dont have exchange and are
just trying to share our calendar information. Surely it cant be that hard to
do can it??

Thanks in advance.

Hi David,

did you read this Microsoft sites about:

"SP1 removes the Internet Free/Busy option from Outlook 2003"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842166/EN-US/

General information how to use the Internet Free/Busy option:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827775/EN/
Does anyone
know if you need to have exchange installed?

You don´t need exchange for the Internet Free/Busy option but:
"Microsoft is ending the internet free/busy service in October due to lack
of use."

Have a look on this site for further information:

They removed the public free/busy site - since they have their own server,
they just need a location for the free/busy files.

Other than entering a URL (any valid url - including file:// works) for the
f/b location, there isn't much to configure. All users will need read/write
access to the location. It's been awhile since I used it, but I think the
user's location is server\folder\user and the search location is just
server\folder.

Dear Diane,

on the microsoft site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827775/EN/

is a complete description also about the valid path names like: file://\\ or
http:// etc..

This is why I posted the complete website.

[....]
but I think the user's location is server\folder\user and the search
location is just server\folder.

I can confirm this. On the german website
(http://www.outlook-net.de/7-11.htm) is a german description including
screenshots of the path like:

"file://\\server\folder\user" for the user and
"file://\\server\folder" as search location.

but I think to get a complete description is (for me) often better then only
a detail.

Thanks Diane and Oliver. I am having the same problem with outlook 2003 as
Diane had. I seem to follow all the instructions to a T (which seem quite
simple and straight forward) but no files are saved to the server. I suspect
my problem is in giving the correct paths to save it to.

In the meantime I am also investigating MS SharePoint which might help us
share our calendar information which is essentially what we set out to do.

Thanks both of you

Well, I know my paths are correct as it works for 2000. <g>

If you have Windows server 2003, use WSS - it's free and while it's not a 2
way sync, it does a very good job of bringing calendar and contacts into
outlook 2003. I have a demo site at http://www.xsolive.com/default.aspx
anyone can test.

Hello all this has help in getting the files posted.
but not all can read the file after it is posted.

I'm in one Domain and the other party is in thier domain.
We post file to the same FTP site.
I can read any vfb files posted and the other party can not read mine.

any ideas how to get the other party to read my VFB file.
