My Vista computer can see XP and all the networked drives. My XP computer
can see and open some of the Vista drives and even share a printer but the D
drive, my data, documents, pictures etc drive, the one I really want to
share, I can't open and just get the don't have permission routine. I have
done everything the same as with the other drives (and the printer) but I
don't get the "everyone" option, so I can't choose it. Why not?

If I'm reading you right, then other computers on your network don't see the
share related to your D: drive, as you can't set the Everyone permissions for
the share.

I didn't have a problem with this, this is how I'd do it:

Right-click on your D; drive in Windows Explorer, click Properties. On the
sharing tab, click the Advanced Sharing button, and accept the User Account
Control warning (you'll need to be an Administrator). Tick the 'Share This
Folder' box, which should automatically give the share name of 'D'. Then
click the Permissions button.

Now, this is where you say you don't have the 'Everyone' option, so you need
to add it. Click the 'Add...' button. You can either type the name of the
user, or display a list of all users by clicking the 'Advanced' and then
'Find Now' buttons, and then select the user you require, in your case,
'Everyone'.

Click OK, and that should add it to the Share Permissions user list, where
you can then give 'Everyone' Read access, and then OK all the dialogs you've
opened.

Hope this works for you,
Chris

Thank you Chris, this helped me understand the Everyone thing. What I found
later in the evening was I can't access any of the partitions on the drive
that has the operating system on it but I can access any of my other
partitions from my other two drives. I have put up another thread to this
effect.
