Hi,

There is a document on my husband's computer that we share. We are
connected to each other's computers through a Router and we share files
and folders.

Before he purchased an XP computer (he had Windows 98) and I have
Windows XP, I was able to make a shortcut to this Excel Document on my
desktop, open it, and add figures in the document and then save it back
to his computer for his use.

Now, he upgraded his computer to XP and once more I made a shortcut from
his computer to my computer and put it on my desktop. But when I try to
add to it, it tells me it is a "Read Only" document and wants me to save
it as a copy or another name. I don't want another document, I just
want to add to his document.

Could you please tell me what I could be doing wrong and how I am
inadvertently making it a "Read Only" document.

I even tried to go through "My Network Places" and updating this excel
file while it is on his computer but once again, when I save it, it will
not allow me to update it because it says it is "Read Only."

Hope this makes sense and someone can help me solve this problem.

Thank you.

Jean

For read only error there may be two reasons.

1. Yours husband's computer is not fully shared and read only. Go to M
computer icon on his computer and make his hard disc as Full shared.

2. Your shortcut is read only. Go to your short cut properties an
check.

Hi,

Thank you for trying to helping me solve my problem.

When I want to share a folder I usually right click the folder and there
is a tab named "Sharing". I am able to click to share with the other
computers. But when I right click the "My Computer" icon, I don't have
an option to share because what comes up is the "System Properties"
Dialog box.

How do I share the My Computer icon? Thank you again for your help.

Jean

P.S. I checked and the file or shortcut is not read only.

Hi

You need to rightclick the c:drive on the other computer, not "M
Computer".
Then choose "Sharing", there you should find a button "Permissions".
Check to see that the share is set to "Change" and not "Read".
That should fix it

Hi,

Thanks for your help. This fixed my problem. I didn't have "Change"
selected.

I'll try to remember this for a future time.
