I have an external USB 2.9 hard drive that I want
to share on my home network. Using simple file sharing
I am able to share the drive on machine A but when I try to
access the drive from machine B I get the following
error message:

"\\dickfic\80gb (J) is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use the network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access
permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

If I move the external drive from machine A to B and share the drive
on the B machine and access from the A machine I get the same message.

I have been able to reproduce this problem on 2 different machines on
2 different networks.

Does anyone know if

1. can usb hard drives be shared on a network?
2. Is there a fix for this problem that I am not aware of.

Any help appreciated - Thanks

If this is to be shared off an XP based machine, the login user account MUST
be defined on the machine that the shared drive is on.

That is to say: The login user account on machine B must exist on machine
A. Windows XP is a secured version of Windows and must resolve the user
name to the local security definitions (machine A). If the user does not
exist, you get this message.

Y.

I agree with your analysis to a point. However, I have SIMPLE FILE
SHARING turned on. Simple File Sharing does not require user accounts
on the machine that is sharing the drive - in this case, machine A.

A true test of this is that I have a firewire hard drive connected to
machine A and i can access it just fine from Machine B without the
need for a user account on machine a.

Make sure your USB drive has appropriate local Guest access permissions
on the root. You may need to boot to safe mode to see the security tab
in Home Edition or temporarily disable simple file sharing in XP Pro to
check and set the Guest permissions on the external drive, then
re-enable simple file sharing.

All simple file sharing access is authenticated to Guest. Network access
is the combination of local permissions and network permissions, so make
sure that network access is Full Control for Everyone or similar.

Have I missed something here? Simple file sharing does NOT require
authentication. If I connect a firewire hard drive to the same
machine and share it I can access it fine from machine B.

If network access requires full permissions, how can I access the
C & D drives on machine A from machine B with no permissions set.

There are no credentials passed, but all network access is treated as
Guest access. Without appropriate guest or everyone permissions, access
is denied.
