Jenny

I was over at a friends. He just installed a small office of 3 windowsxp
pro's (new Dells). In one of the offices is the printer. I tried to share
the
printer, but couldn't ever even see the network from any of the computers.
How do you do that in pro???
Thanks

Hi Jenny,

First of all ensure that you have the same network name eg workgroup, give
PCs IP addresses.

Second you have to create users (the ones on the other PCs) on the pc which
is sharing the printer.

Third share the printer and under security, add the users you created above
giving them full rights to the printer.

Alternatively, purchase a small print server and that way every PC will be
able to print independently.

Let me know how you go

I have been thinking about a print server. Any suggestions.
There are two different printers.
thanks GB!!!

Hi Jenny,

I use the netgear PS 101, it is a single port print server easy to install,
and no need for a parallel cable. If the printers are close to one another,
then a dual port Netgear or even the cheaper makes are just as good. with
dual ports though u would need parallel cables.

Usually this print server are web based and really easy to configure...

see how u go..

Sorry Jenny, I forgot to mention that with win XP pro, u actually don't have
to go throught the whole setup thing.

Once you have configured the print server with an IP address, you can
install the printer/s normally installing a local printer in XP, untick the
discover plug and play printers option, and then create a tcp/ip port, give
it the ip address and then use the appropriate printer driver, that's it!!!

If you use a dual port print server, the wizard will ask you which port the
specific printer is on, in all I must confess I am quite impressed with the
microsoft efforts. I think XP Pro is a good system, the home
edition....well.....rather leave it alone...

You have my e-mail address if you have still some trouble, feel free to
contact me.

Do I add the user names or the computer names to the user list on the
computer
that is located at the printers??

I added the user names of the other people but I still don't see how I even
see the printer from their computers. I miss Network Neighborhood. How
do you look at the network from xp pro??
