sharing a directory

Why, when i share a directory under XP (media edition SP2), does it have to
spend half an hour going through every stinking file in the directory and
its sub-dirs and change all the permissions?
Is there an easier way to just share the directory? I only need RO access
(for backups)

I dont understand. What "recursive option"? I dont see any option like that
under either sharing or properties.
I'm only right clicking and selecting "share" and i leave "let others change
my files" unchecked. When i click OK it takes a long time with a flying
folder dialog changing the perms on every file under that dir. It shouldnt
need to do that (or so it seems).

No.
It will only do that if you change actual permissions of the directory
with the recusive option checked.
