Hi,

three times today our files server got unavailable for
users as for file shares and printers. This server is also
DC, GC, DNS and DHCP. There were no error messages in
event logs. After restart it was OK for couple of hours.
Then it repeated...

Anyone has an idea where to look of what to trace?

Many thanks.

Michal Sloup

What events do you see in the system logs on the workstations?
What are the exact symptoms you see when this happens?

Hi Michal ,

Thanks for your posting here.

Can you ping the file server name from clients when the problem occur? What
is the result if you ping the IP?

Please make sure that the DNS setting is pointing to itself in the network
properties on the server, and the clients all pointing to the file server
for name resolution.

Have a nice day!

Hi Bob,

IP configuration seems to be OK. DNS points to itself.

Hi Michal,

Can you browse the shares if you try to connect by using the IP address of
the domain controller?
Does the problem occur on all the clients or just some certain computers?

Please try the suggestion provided in the following document.

257734 Event ID 5788 and Event ID 5789 Appear in the System Event Log
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=257734

Wish it helps.

Hi Bob,

when the server is in problem, I can ping, I can access it
via RDP (Terminal Server). If I try "net view \\name", I
receive Error 64 or Error 53. I have capture from Network
Monitor. Please let me know where to send. The
communication ends on packet with "Negotiate Dialect = NT
LM 0.12" (sent by client). Then there is no answer from
the server.

I'm considering reinstallation of the server but I'm not
sure if it helps.

Any advice is highly appreciated.

Regards

Michal

Hi Michal,

What is the operation system running on the server ?

Based on my experiences, the problem can be caused by the network adapter
on your server. I would like to recommend that you change the NIC on your
server then try again.

If the problem still persist, please download the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE from
the following link on your Desktop before processing:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

To run this tool:

1. Double-click on the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE file.

2. A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.

Please run the tool on your server and client, then send the CAB files to
(e-mail address removed) with the SAME SUBJECT.

Thank you,

Dear Bob,

the operating system is W2K Server SP2. The server HW is
Compaq ProLiant DL360 G2. NIC is Compaq Gigabit Adapter.

Yesterday night I reinstalled the server completely
(without SMS and Quota Server). I will monitor it and if
the problem will occur I will use the tool and send you
the data.

Thanks a lot for all you efforts.

DEar all

This mornign it seems that our server had the same issue re the Shares unavailable.

This server is a DC / File server and DB Server.

On restart this morning, clients were not able to connect on the shares.
SHares were not viewable from Network Places.

A Net share on the server gave the complete list ot Shares as ok.
And ping to the server was working fine.

We restarted then Server service and all seems to work now.

We would like to understand what could happens to avoid it asap.

No specific event viewer error message on the server neither on clients.

What could we check ??

Thanks a lot.
