Sharepoint - Web/Internal?

Is sharepoint services only for internal use rather than the web at large? I
can't figure out whether the end result of a sharepoint website i.e. news and
reviews can be viewed by the general masses or if it's just for the select
few to communicate and view from within?

Is it both or just for the selected viewers?
 
Normally best suited for a controlled group of members
- depending on the permissions you set the pages can be viewed by others, but the member links (add/edit/comment/respond, etc) will
generally confuse the non member viewer
