SharePoint Designer Linked Datasources

I don't know if I'm posting in the right place, but I have been working with
SharePoint designer and I need to create a linked query between two lists for
display in a dataview. However, I cannot seem to get the list data to show up
correctly.

So, here's the scenario:
I have two lists
Projects and Project Tasks

Project Tasks has a field named Days Expended to track the time a task has
been worked on. Project Tasks has a lookup to the Project list. When I link
up these items, there doesn't appear to be any way to query the data to do a
simple calculation like sum(alldaysexpended) and display it in the dataview.
I have worked with several XPath queries and none seem to return the data in
a consumable format to display a total number of days works.

I would just use the Multiple Projects and Budgeting application template
for WSS 3.0, but it doesn't fit my needs and I haven't been successful at
modifying it.

Thanks for any help (or a push in the right direction) that can be offered!
