SharePoint - Adding Items Crashes IE 6

The following has been occurring for the past few months, however in the past
few SharePoint Demos I have had to be careful not to add items w/IE. I use
Maxthon or FireFox browsers, however they do not have the best functionality
w/MS web parts.

Most of the time (90%) when I try to add a new item or edit existing items
to SharePoint, IE crashes. I receive the 'We are sorry for the
inconvenience, Please tell Microsoft about this problem.' And some time
followed by 'iexplore.exe - Application Error' dialog, stating 'The
instruction at "0x031bc512" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory
could not be "read".

IE disappears although Task Manager shows it is still running in the
Applications tab.

Are you running the MSN search toolbar with tabbed browsing and Desktop
search?
First test - Create a new account with Administrator rights. Log on as that
user and try your sharepoint demos.... If they work fine and you have the
toolbar installed then its the toolbar and the desktop search. I had the
same problem and error messages after installing the toolbar and running it
for a while... except the problem occurred when running Outlook.. MS are
aware of the problem and have posted on the toolbar site that their Outlook
team is looking into it...

I uninstalled the toolbar but this did not seem to help and the problem
persists on that user account. I now use a spare account that I had set
aside 'just in case' I needed an Administrator account to get in.

1. Check for updates for the toolbar.... they may have fixed the problem by
now.
2. If the new account works fine, then continue to use it for your demos
until MS come up with a fix..

To be fare, and if it turns out that you have the toolbar, MS offered the
toolbar for free with the usual disclaimers etc...The developer blogs
mention their trials and trivulations in bringing it to market on time

Rob,

Thanks for the input. Yes I am running the MSN Toolbar stuff. I had a
feeling it was an IE add-in, I even un-installed the MSN Toolbar - nothing
happened or helped. Never thought of un-installing and creating a new user.

I will try to locate the offending registry entries to get it out of an
existing user, and then post the results back here for everyone.

Thanks a lot, I think you have the answer...

Thanks Brent... I am waiting for MS to come up with a fix... I realy like
the tabbed browser and the desktop search. Although it was a bit painful
setting up a new admin account worked fine. Once MS come back with an alpha
version I can revert back to my real admin account.
Its probably a good idea to leave back doors on your PC (secondary admin
accounts) so long as they are password protected.

I tried finding how the MSN toolbar was hooking in to the Shell Browser ( in
startup run, under BHOs etc) but for the life of me I could not find it. It
must be low level threaded task that is keeping a watch on file changes on
your hard disk. The MSN toolbar uninstall didn't quite do a full job,
something is hanging around.

Rob,

Well I tried the un-install, create a new user w/Admin rights, and it still
bombed - same as usual (SSDD). I believe you are correct in your thoughts, I
will research more and let you know my findings.

Oh, I did a registry search and found two keys relating to "MSN Search":
1.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Research\Sources\{88686849-2DD9-474D-9300-778E3336FA5D}\{5ECE69BA-86F3-43F1-B120-E16447CBD2F7}
2.
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-839522115-1284227242-725345543-4026\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Research\Sources\{88686849-2DD9-474D-9300-778E3336FA5D}\{5ECE69BA-86F3-43F1-B120-E16447CBD2F7}

Thanks for your help!
