Running XP Pro on a domain with SBS 2003. Printer is a Brother MFC-8440.
Was working fine as a shared printer connected to another PC until I decided
to change the shared name of the printer.
At a certain workstation the printer with the previous name was still
showing in Printers and Faxes as well as the one with the new name. Problem
was that the one with the OLD name was flagged as the default and all
printing capabilities were frozen. If I tried to change the default printer
the Printers and Faxes window would freeze. I was finally able to be faster
than the computer and changed the default printer to the one with the new
name.
Now the printing capabilities are back but I still have the OLD printer
listed in Printers and Faxes. Trying to delete it gives me an error;
something to the effect that "the printer cannot be reached, you may have
typed the name wrong or the name may have changed."
The problem is only with this PC in particular. The others show only the
correct printer. This machine had problems as well with its local printer, a
Brother MFC-7420. After downloading the new driver from Brother and fighting
like crazy to uninstall the previous one, I was able to install the new
driver to the MFC-7420. I have designated this one as the default.
How can I delete the previously shared printer which no longer exist?
