Shared Printer Problem

Have two systems doing the same thing. Dell Optiplex computers running XP
Professional SP2 with all the latest patches. HP 1018 printer connected via
USB and shared. Printer will work for a while and then stop printing. If
you stop and restart the spooler the print jobs start again. There is
nothing of interest in the Event Viewer when this happens.

Any ideas are appreciated.

make sure all the clients have write access to the
windows\system32\spool\printers directory

I have seen drivers in the past that write to other areas as well, You
would need to contact the driver vendor to determine where that would be.

When the spooler is restarted, the pending print jobs are scheduled in the
spooler context since the job no longer contains the security descriptor for
the user.

The user group on the computer which included the domain users had write
rights. I will try to give full rights to domain users and see if that
makes a difference and will report back.

Does it make sense though that if this was the problem that restarting the
spooler would cause the jobs to print? Sounds more like a problem with the
spooler to me.

Thanks

This did not fix the problem.

Any other ideas?

Make sure the USB ports never go to sleep. It's somewhere in device manager
in the USB device configuration
