i'm trying to print to a shared hp officejet pro k550 printer that's hosted
on a machine running 98se. i'm using xp pro. when i run the software that
comes with the printer it attempts to find the printer on the network but
fails to do so. i then specifiy the netbios name of the host machine and it
still fails to find the printer. i also tried specifying the ip address of
the host machine without success. the shared printer appears in the list of
shares for the host machine and when i try to connect to it using
right-click connect from the xp machine explorer waits for a few minutes
with the hourglass displayed and then reports an error. when i try to add
the printer using "add printer" i get an rpc error when i try to browse to
the shared printer. the error is: "Error: the data area passed to a system
call is too small". i see there's a hotfix associated with this message but
i haven't tried it as i can't tell if the situation that it's meant for is
the same as mine and the microsoft support page indicates not to use it if
the system isn't exhibiting the problem for which it's specified. any ideas?
thanks
