I want to set up my XP pro computer as a file server, and
thus allow remote users (also on XP Pro) remote access to
files stored on my computer over the internet. I
understnad that the remote desktop cannot perform this
function as files are not transferred. How can I achieve
this?

A VPN is a safe and secure way to allow remote users access to your local files...

Just FYI, Remote Desktop "can" be used for File Transfers - it is
pretty inefficient at it though...
