I'm on Excel 2002 in XP. My workbook is indicating in the title bar
"[Shared]" after the name of the file.

What does it mean and does it make a difference for how I work with data in
the workbook?

It means that you (or someone) told excel it was ok for multiple people to
update the workbook at the same time.

Tools|Share Workbook
is where you can toggle this setting.

And there are lots of things you can't do in a shared workbook. Look at excel's
help for "features that are unavailable in shared workbooks" for a nice list.
