How do I get win xp to ask for the user id and pass of the
win2k box? it used to ask for it and now it doesn't and I
want it to... can anyone help?

Scott

PS. I've turned off Simple file sharing.

Are you sure the user that is logging in from the W2K
machine doesn't already have permissions to use the
file/folder?

Did it stop after you loaded a service pack? A critical
update?

What has changed?

Re installed Win xp after a nasty little virus deleted my
task manager image and after it had already corrupted
norton. it was fun, but everything else was set up the
exact way I had it before... (computer geek :-)) I know
how things are set up, but this is just boggling my mind.

Any chance that the Guest account is enabled on the target server? If guest
is on, than any "failed" authentication is collapsed into Guest (unless
Guest has a password and the passwords don't match). This would result in
auth's that should have failed to appear to succeed (as Guest). If the auth
succeeds, then Cred manager will never prompt you for a password.

Thanks,
Dave
