I use a Windows 2000 Pro SP4 PC to share a physical disk across a Local
Ethernet network of a mix of Windows 2000 PRO and Windows XP Home SP2 PC
clients, with some Windows 98 SE machines also connected to the Network
(shared ADSL broadband access via Netgear wireless router).
Every day, when users switch on the client PC's, the share on the 'server'
cannot be accessed. Rebooting the 'server' re-establishes access to the
disk share.
Can anyone point me to a reason why the share drops/disconnects overnight?
(Note1: Occasionally the shared disk (server) is accessible first thing in
the morning, but then 'dissappears' early morning, returning only after
rebooting the 'server'.
Note 2: I have moved all the sharing PC's to fixed IP addresses, and the
disk share to use the IP address of the 'server' but with no change in the
observed problem.
Note 3: I can always ping the 'server', even when not able to connect to the
share.)
Observations appreciated.
