Shared databases

We have multiple Access 2003 databases on our server which are used my
multiple people. All of a sudden, each database can only be opened by one
user at a time. We don't get a message saying that the database is in use by
another person; Access simply won't open at all. You click on it or say open
file and nothing happens. If the other person closes the database, then you
can open it.

I've checked all of the databases and they are all coded to be shared and no
tables or records are locked. I've also checked all of the server folders to
make sure that they are all shared and that all of the users have Read,
Write, Create, & Delete priviledges.

Any ideas as to what could be causing the files to not be shared would be
great!
 
It sounds like you've already checked on this, so my experience may not
apply...

I ran into a similar situation a few years back. After spending three days
trying to isolate the issue, I learned that our network gurus had modified
permissions at a higher folder level and "rippled" the permissions down.

Once they fixed this, the applications worked as they had before.

(hmmm? I never did hear WHY they made the change...<g>)

I have had a similar thing with Access and found that it was possible to open
multiple instances by going into Access then opening the databse using the
File, Open etc etc. In order to get around the issue of it not working from
shortcuts it was necessary to modify the shortcut to open Access first and
then open the Database.
In the shortcut properties ensure the Target window contains something like

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE"
"\\ServerName\foldername\databasename.mdb"

and the Start In: window contains the folder for the MS Access application

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\"
