Shared borders and link bars - bad press

I read something yesterday on a site that works with FP websites that said
something to the effect of "we do not support, endorse, or work with shared
borders, link bars...." I often seem to hear negative things about these
components. I use them both all the time because I don't charge much for my
sites and they streamline deign and maintenance - and in many cases help
avoid human error. Is there some reason why these things get bad press?
should I stop using them?

Use what you are comfortable with and what your clients need or will pay for
- some developers feel shared borders and nav/link bars are too constrained, and the "canned" FP themes are too amateurish
FYI
In FP 2003 shared borders are deprecated and replaced by Dynamic Web Templates
