Is it possible to share a scanner over a LAN?
Three ways:
1) Get network-aware equipment
2) Add a scanner server
3) Buy more scanners
One of my clients recently acquired a Canon ImageRunner IR2200
(
www.imagerunner.com) that is networked. Any client workstation on the
LAN can communicate with it for its printing, faxing, and scanning
capabilities. It costs several thousand dollars.
A few years ago, I reviewed a product that acts as a scanner server, much
the same way an add-on device acts like a printer server. The NetCore
ScanShare device (
www.netcore.com.tw) works with many SCSI-based
scanners. You can Google for "scanner server" to see if there are any
distributors of this or similar equipment in your area. You can read my
review at
http://www.sacpcug.org/archives/0007/frontpag.html.
Or you can take all that cash and buy four more scanners. Attach them to
key workstations throughout the office.
I understand the need for a scanner server. Tensions were getting thick
when the user of the workstation that had the scanner attached was
constantly interrupted by others in the office.
A software-based solution:
The workstation that has the scanner attached is running an operating
system that gives remote connections a separate desktop, such as Terminal
Server.
