share scanner

Scan the document using the computer the scanner is connected to then
save the file to the other computer. This is kinda like sharing a
CD-RW drive, you have to be AT the computer to put in the blank CD or
the image to scan, so you might as well perform the task there and
save the data to the remote PC or burn the data over the network...

HP makes a network device called a ScanJet.. its a shared network resource,
and it can convert a document to a .pdf and email it to you.

Is it possible to share a scanner over a LAN?

Three ways:

1) Get network-aware equipment
2) Add a scanner server
3) Buy more scanners

One of my clients recently acquired a Canon ImageRunner IR2200
(www.imagerunner.com) that is networked. Any client workstation on the
LAN can communicate with it for its printing, faxing, and scanning
capabilities. It costs several thousand dollars.

A few years ago, I reviewed a product that acts as a scanner server, much
the same way an add-on device acts like a printer server. The NetCore
ScanShare device (www.netcore.com.tw) works with many SCSI-based
scanners. You can Google for "scanner server" to see if there are any
distributors of this or similar equipment in your area. You can read my
review at http://www.sacpcug.org/archives/0007/frontpag.html.

Or you can take all that cash and buy four more scanners. Attach them to
key workstations throughout the office.

I understand the need for a scanner server. Tensions were getting thick
when the user of the workstation that had the scanner attached was
constantly interrupted by others in the office.

A software-based solution:
The workstation that has the scanner attached is running an operating
system that gives remote connections a separate desktop, such as Terminal
Server.

Looks like the easiest thing is to move the scanner across
the room when I want to use it. Thanks Brian, Mike &
Nutcracker!

I found this software that lets you share any TWAIN device over
windows XP, 2000 etc.

It works just fine. I am using it with my $60 Agfa Snapscan scanner,
and everyone on my network can now use the scanner and it can even be
shared over the Internet!

They are currently giving it away for non-profits.

You can the site by doing a search in google for
share scanner

but I will save you that step:

YES!

Yes, it is possible and it works well with any TWAIN compatible
scanner, which these days, nearly 100% are. You just need a bit of
simple to use, low-cost as as well as free commercial software.

I was so frustrated before, that after finding this I am very happy to
plug this thing.

The company that provides it is Remotescan.

You can find the software by searching for
remote scan

Or you can just go to their web site at
http://www.share-scanner.com

The client version is free, and lets you test out how it works; with
the free client copy you are able to operate a scanner located at
their company location.

There is also a an exchange program where you get the full package for
free if you give a web site link back to http://www.share-scanner.com

If a scanner can be used over a network why can't I use it when logged
in as only an administrator? This is per Mustek and a 1200 III EP scanner.
