What's the trick to changing folder's attributes out of read only and have it stay that way? They seem to take the change OK, and the files within them stay OK, but re-opening the folder takes it right back to read only.
Thanks in advance

This is actually by design.
Explorer ignores read only on folders.

You can change it using the attrib command from a command prompt

Have done this (attrib) and it doesn't seem to "take".
Any ideas?
BTW: what's the blue underline of a folder designate?
Thanks

It takes.

The reason you still see a tick in the folders properties is because windows always does this for folders, no matter what.

Is the tick sort of greyed out.
The check boxes are tristate, they can be unchecked, checked or indeterminate.
Unchecked is blank, checked is ticked and indeterminate is a greyed out tick.

Again, Explorer takes no notice of read only properties on folders so there is really no reason to care about it.

Do a test. Create a new folder, mark it read only, now delete it.
See you can delete it, no warning messages appear.
The property is only there for backward compatability reasons.
