Is there a way to share a folder without the shared
folder "hand" displaying (i.e. so a casual viewer looking
at the directory will see the standard folder icon rather
than the icon of a folder with a hand under it) ?

Thanks :-)

I don't know how to do that for shared folders on an individual basis.
To remove the hand from all shared folders:

1. Run the registry editor and open this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Network\SharingHandler\Default

2. Change the value from "ntshrui.dll" to the null string.

However, the folder will still show as shared in the Computer
Management tool, so it isn't possible to create an un-detectable
share.
