HI ALl

We have setup a win/mac network and all shares reside on a W2K server and
everthying is OK till we installed Adobe InCopy on our Macs, When a user
save an InCopy document to the Win2K share it is saved OK but when he tries
to open it again it is not recognized as an InCopy document anymore..

Does this have anything to do with the fact that InCopy uses a 4 letter
extension (.incd)? Have any one heard of any solution to this?

Thanks a lot for your time

Hi Saleh!

A four letter file extension is just fine and quite common.

You mention SFM in your subject but I'd still like to ask how are your
Macs connecting to your Windows server? AFP (which uses SFM) or SMB
(which uses Windows file sharing)? Whichever they're using, they should
all be connecting the same way.

Can you explain what you mean by "it is not recognized as an InCopy
document anymore"? Is the file's icon generic or does it still have an
InCopy icon? Are you simply unable to double-click the file and have it
open? Or will trying to open the file through InCopy (File --> Open)
work?

the answer is AFP

I mean that it cannot be (literally) re-opend .
Is the file's icon generic or does it still have an
InCopy icon?

It gets a generic icon
Are you simply unable to double-click the file and have it

work?

Niether ways will work. double clicking will show a Choose application
dialog in wich Incopy is disabled (Unselectable).. File--> Open will not
work either and the file is shown dimmed (disabled -unselectable)

Thanks for your coperation

Hi Saleh!

It's very strange that your problem is limited to InCopy files (other
files are just fine?).

A few things to try for troubleshooting's sake:

1. Can you select an InCopy file on the server, choose Get Info and set
the "Open With" application to InCopy? And if you set this for all like
documents, does this stick?

2. If you right-click the InCopy file on the server and select "Open
With..." and select InCopy, does this work? You may need to change the
drop down menu at the top to allow you to choose from all files and not
just "recommended" files.

3. Can you create another Mac volume temporarily on the server and test
whether or not you have the same problem with it? If that's OK, then you
may need to delete the Mac volume and recreate it. (This doesn't delete
files; it just deletes the Mac "share" and you can reshare it again.)

Yes only InCopy files affected by this problem.

I did that and it worked (Per Computer aka I need to do this on each Mac)
but the Icon still generic.

With..." and select InCopy, does this work? You may need to change the

It worked but still per-computer and the Icon is still generic.

That didn't work I even tried a Mac volume on another server with no use.

Altough you have provided some usefull solution (many thanks for that) I'm
still confused about the cause of this problem??

Hi Saleh!

The fact that you're seeing this on another server as well is a good
indication that InCopy is probably the cause of your problem rather than
the the Windows Server OS. While I don't have a solution for you, I
would be curious to know what happens if you do one more thing.

Using the Get Info method above can work for two things. When you
include the file extension and "Change All..." then you're changing for
all files ending with that file extension.

However, if you then delete the file extension and "Change All..." then
you're changing for all files with the same resource fork as well. Do
this as well. Delete the file extension while in the Get Info window so
that you can be sure it's not hidden and then "Change All..."

Finally, you may want to post your question to the Adobe forums. I would
be someone there has seen what you're seeing.

Good luck! bill
