Hi everybody,

I have a problem which is comprehensibly and independant
from any hardware:
Server-side: Win2003 - Server with SFM and one Macintosh
Share
Client-side: PPC G4 or G5 with OS X Panther 10.3.x

When I mount this shared servervolume on the mac with AFP
and then open the folder with column-view, the first look
to the content is horrible slow. Sometimes, with many
files and folders in it, the rotating circle cursor comes
up and rotates for several seconds until I can see the
content.
Apple knows this and I think Microsoft knows this, too.

What I would like to know is: Is SFM still in development
by Microsoft? If not, there is one good workint third
party product I can use, but I don´t want this because I
would have to pay it.
I would take Apple Server in the future.

Greetings.

The slow to fill column view over AFP issue seems to have been introduced
with Mac OS 10.3. We did not see it in previous releases of the Mac OS
including: OS 8.5, 9, 10, and 10.1. Mac OS 10.3+ clients will experience
this problem connecting to NT4, Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 servers. At
this time the workarounds are to use folder views or use SMB shares.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 823356 may help - it contains
instructions on how to obtain the hotfix associated with this issue.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823356

Excerpt:
SYMPTOMS
When you copy a large file from a Macintosh computer to a Microsoft Windows
Server 2003-based computer that is running Services for Macintosh, the file
copies slowly.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if Windows Server 2003 does not send the final
Reply-DSI-Write signal during the transfer of each data block. The Macintosh
computer must wait for this signal before it can send more data. When the
Macintosh computer does not receive this signal, it waits for about 50
milliseconds, and then it sends an ACK signal to the Window Server
2003-based computer. The ACK signal causes Windows Server 2003 to send the
Reply-DSI-Write signal, and the file copy continues. When you copy a large
file, these delays add up and increase the time it takes to copy the file.
