when you do this it will ask you for the XP CD, hopefully you have a CD
that's upgraded to sp1.

In a normal SP1 update install from an original XP, you get i386 installed
onto your C drive and the registry changed to look there for updates. For
some reason this sometimes doesn't happen and you have a problem. You can
change Registry to reflect the correct path by searching for i386 and when
you find the one referring to where XP should look for unchanged Windows
files, change SourcePath to the hard disk folder.
