On 6/4, MAP advised Ryan that if he ran sfc /scannow to replace any
operating system files that are missing.

Please tell me what sfc /scannow is, and where to find it.

If it replaces OS files that are missing, I may be able to use it and won't
have to do a post describing the recent erratic activities of Windows XP
Home.

Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?

System File Checker and it is a part of Windows XP. Simply place your XP CD
in the drive, go to Start and type sfc /scannow in the run box and press
enter. Note, there is a space between sfc and the forward slash. Also
note, this won't work with all OEM setups. If you have a proprietary disk
from your PC manufacturer, it may or may not work.

Ann,
This [sfc] is an acronym for the "System File Checker" Tool which (so far as
i know) can only be accessed via a command line instruction [Command
Prompt]. To use it,
A. Go to: Start/Run/type "cmd" [less quote markers], and click "OK".
B. In the subsequent window [Command Prompt], type "sfc /scannow" [again,
less quote markers], and press the keyboard "Enter" key.
C. Let it run. It will check the operating system for the presense of
necessary uncorrupted files and will repair/replace any identified
missing/corrupted files utilizing your system CD [I hope you have one].
D. Scannow is just one switch for this Tool [and about the only one you
need]; to see the others, follow the A. and B. route EXCEPT type "sfc /?"
this time to see a brief help file plus the other switches.
Hope this helps you,
