Severe degradation in CD performance after XP upgrade

I have just upgraded my OS from Win 98 to XP
Professional. After the upgrade, my CD drives do not
appear to be reading and writing above 1X. When I put a
CD into the drive, it takes about a minute before I see
the volume name in Windows Explorer. If I click one of
the directories, it takes at least five minutes before
the contents of the directory are displayed.

I've been working with support from the computer and CD
manufacturers with no success. Has anyone else seen this
type of issue after an upgrade to Windows XP Professional?

Thanks,

Dave

David, rt click MyComputer>select Prop>Hardware>Device Manager>DvD/CDrom
Drives. Rt click on yours
and choose uninstall. Restart and let WinXP reinstall the cdrom. Also,
IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers. rt click on Primary>Prop>Advanced Settings.
Select DMA if available. Do the same with the Secondary.

Rich,

Thanks for the suggestions. I had performed these steps
with the same results. It turns out there was some old
Adaptec software that came with the computer which was
causing the conflict. Once I removed that service, the
drives worked fine.
