Severe Defender Problem

Dear Fellow Users-I started few weeks ago unable to open or save email
attachments. Same time unable to download and run software installs on
computer. Contacted software developer, tech support and there was no
solution. Finally un-installed Defender and all blocked functions returned.
This was not expected since I have Defender installed on my laptop which does
not have problems. I tried re-install and all the blocking of function
happened again. After un-install good again. Anyone else experience this?

Bob

Yes. In fact, I've experienced this one personally on my own machine.

I have a recipe--well--it's more of a tutorial, almost, about how to correct
this issue.

I'd be willing to go through it with you if you want to take the time to try
to make this work--it is also possible that Microsoft will be able to
correct this themselves in a later version of the beta2 product.

How comfortable are you about looking for things in the registry
editor? --the process involves cutting and pasting a long string of numbers
and letters (a guid) and then visually pattern matching for certain entries
containing that guid, followed by identifying the product related to that
entry.

I think this is resolvable, but I've yet to do it successfully via a
newsgroup process--let me know what you think, given my description.

I installed Defender yesterday and now wish I had kept the beta 1 version
which gave me no trouble. Well I also installed three Windows updates which
may be confusing the issue. First, the SpyNet option was slowing things down
to a crawl and I have opted out for now. Even so, Windows messenger now takes
for ever to log on and there is no hope of opening IExplorer before it
finishes.

Then I find the Software Explorer has not yet classified many programs I
load, for example; Skype, IEPrivacyKeeper, Sony Vaio ISB utility and Power
Management, and very surprisingly Windows OneCare is also not yet signed or
classified. (The "enable" button is for ever greyed out.)

The only way I have managed to get to write this now, is by stopping the
IEPrivacyKeeper program which cleans up temporary files and cookies after
each internet session. I have not met any problem with it before.

This, with the dreadful slow updates and virus scans of OneCare, I see
myself going back to Symantec yet, which is a pity as the Microsoft solution
should be better integrated and atleast as well engineered.

Dear Bill-I appreciate your offer to help but don't think I am comfortable
tinkering with the registry. I will wait to see if Microsoft fixes this in
next program.
Thanks!
Bob

Bill-just curious-going to Windows Defender website there is link to how all
the Microsoft Antispyware software compares. Seems that Windows One Care
does everything that Windows Defender does. If one has WOC does Defender add
much?
Thanks,
Bob

I haven't looked at that comparison yet. Windows OneCare does not now
include any antispyware technology. My understanding is that before
release, it will. I'm not aware of other antispyware technology for the
consumer platform that Microsoft is bringing to market besides Windows
Defender.

So-they need to lick the issue that we both saw. I believe they have a good
understanding of what is going wrong. In fact, I can give you a relatively
easy fix, but it involves turning off antivirus scanning of attachments or
downloads--not something that you'd want to do lightly--in fact, I'd always
advise maintaining antivirus protection over adding antispyware protection.

OK - I've looked at the chart--I don't like it much-- The Malicious Software
Removal tool I believe has a significantly different focus than the general
prevent and remove features that will be found in OneCare and Microsoft
Client Protection--but I've proved that I don't know what I am talking about
in this area before!

I think we'll have to wait and see in April how the OneCare folks add
antispyware--I probably shouldn't speculate too much about that at this
point.
