Greetings, and Happy Holiday to all.

I've been having a problem with sneak-in programs being loaded onto my
system by web pages. I have laboriously delteted them from my system
using the 'Ad or Remove Programs' function from the control panel,
which usually removes the program. Now, however, when I look at the
startup tab in msconfig, those items are still there and checked. I
have tried changing them, even gone into safe mode to do this, but
when I restart the machine, there's always that annoying popup
reminding me that I've changed the config.sys, and if I need to
restart again. Whether I restart or not, when I look at msconfig, the
items are checked again. Is there somebody here who can tell me how
do I get rid of these check boxes?

Another problem which relates to the above is when I try to access the
registry where these things are stored, they're not in a registry I
can get to. The OS only shows the HKEY registries, but not the HKLM
or others. Is there a way I can access these?

Any assistance, especially from knowlegable MVP's, is greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

MVP Kelly has a utility that will automatically delete any disabled items in
msconfig/start up. Go to her website at the following URL and look on Line
148, right column. Click the "Clear disabled items from msconfig startup"
link to download the file. Double click the file to run.

Ronnie Vernon gives you some info. In addition, Get Ad-aware and/or Spybot,
Search and Destroy [I would get both-they are free] to keep Spyware and
Addware removed from your system.

Thank you both. Now, I have another issue which concerns IE (whatever
v. came with XP). All of a sudden, only a few of the sites I'm going
to appear on the history, and only those which seem to implant their
own wothless programs on my system. Is there an explanation/fix for
this? Again, many thanks.

Take Gene's advice and get Adaware and Spybot. It sounds like you have some
nasties left in there.

I've downloaded, installed and used both programs. They've eliminated
tons of crap from my system, but I still cannot get a history on IE.
I thought reinstalling the IE component might help, but when I went to
Setup Windows Components, I received the following message: "Setup was
unable to information file xp40ext.inf. Contact your system
administrator. The specific error code is 0 (zero or "oh"?)X2 line
2011777033." After pressing ok, the message is "Application could not
be initialized." Could you tell me what all this means? Thanks again
for all your assistance, you guys.
