When I try to download a file, it downloads for a little bit and then stops. If it is a smaller file, I sometimes can get it do download in on one try, but if it is a big file I have to restart the download many times.

IE will not display .asp web pages correctly. If there is an include in the .asp code, it will not display the file. If there is no html code on the page, it will display the asp code as text in IE.

IE will not remember passwords.

I'm using XP home, sp1, all current updates, IE 6

It sounds more like a connection problem rather than a
problem with IE. Do this, go to www.pcpitstop.com
Test your download & upload speed. Write the details,
including transmission speed down. Also do a ping test,
and see if your dropping packets. If your dropping
packets, that would definately explain why you have to
keep restarting your downloads. If you have a cable
modem, you can go to www.neotechcc.com and in that site,
identify your modem. It will give you an address for the
internal page. Take allthis info to your ISP. If there's a
problem with the connection, those numbers might mean
something to them. Its possible you may have a bad
connection, a failing eth card or cable, lots of
possiblities there. But downloads shouldnt fail.

Now, For Ie to remember passwords, autocomplete must be
turned on, and the feature to remember usernames and
passwords must be on. To do this, click tools, internet
options, and click on the content tab. Make sure
Autocomplete is set to remember passwords. (it needs to
prompt you inorder to save the passwords..) Once it is,
it should ask once more for the username and password, and
that's it. There is an MS article regarding Autocomplete,
because there is an instance in which it will not work. I
havent seen this very often, just type "IE will not
remember passwords" in the search bar for the knowledge
base and it should come up with that article for you.

As for the asp pages displaying like text files, you got
me there. Im not sure what would cause that. Check your
connection, get autocomplete running. Its possible that
it may be a side effect of something, its also possible
you may need to reinstall IE. Im just not sure about it.
If I come across something in the course of my day that
will help you with that, I'll post it here. Go ahead and
do all your usual maintenence (scan disk to fix file
errors, clear temp files, virus scan, etc) just to make
sure its not something simple goofing you up. But it
sounds like you may have tried all that already. Keep us
posted...

It is not a connection issue. And I have ad-ware on the computer, so there is no spyware.

I also have my internet security set on medium.

Greg, are you talking FTP here?

If so there's a setting in internet options advanced tab to use Passive
FTP... you might experiment with that.

If not FTP have you cleared out temporary internet files recently? From time
to time I get something similar, it just comes and goes.
