Setup Sygate for stealth only?

I posted this in comp.security.firewalls but got no replies. Thought
I'd try here.
How do I set up Sygate Personal Firewall so it lets everything have
access to the internet without prompting for permission, but still
keeps the stealth capability?

My customers are novices and unable to decide what should/should not,
be allowed access. I tell them to let everything have access and they
are still deriving the main benefit of stealthing their conection.

Any help will be appreciated.

Personal feelings aside of Sygate PF (although their support bods are
pleasant).. you need to configure the rules you want.. and then disable
the "learning" option (or whatever it is.. I forget now). This will turn
off the prompts.. but keep the rules inplace that are defined.

Can't offer more info unfortunately.. I eradicated that VERY poor piece of
software a long time ago.. but it had to be a format.. the thing just
would NOT uninstall.. even with various discussions with their suport bods
and uninstall files sent to me from them.

YMMV of course.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply, Ian. I'll check out your
suggestion. I've never heard complaints about SPF, so your negative
experience is of some concern.

What [freeware] software personal firewall do you recommend? I
sometimes install Kerio 2.1.5 if I have a problem installing SPF. I've
never had a problem uninstalling it but will be alert to problems.

Cheers,
Larry

No probs =)

I can't remember the version number unfortunately else I'd at least supply
that for you.. but all I can say is it was a couple of years ago.. this
may have been fixed.

On "Sygates side" however, as previously mentioned, their support people
did try hard to help me via e-mail and sent me a couple of files to try to
uninstall it.. but nothing worked unfortunately (apart from that, at the
time, I didn't think it was all that bad).

I can't rule out that it _may_ have been an issue with my box.. but after
spending a week (not constantly) trying to uninstall it.. I'd kind of
given up hope.

I don't run a PFW anymore.. this windoze box sites behind my *nix gateway
with no port fwding defaultly enabled etc.. but I ran Kerio for a while
too and this seemed to work pretty well. I have read bad things about
their v4(?) but their 2.x.x branch was pretty good.

The last one I used on 2k was Agnitum Outpost. I believe they offer botha
free and pro (paid) version.. don't quote me on that.. but might be worth
a look.

Tiny PFW is another that is quite common ("sister" to Kerio) which you
might also consider looking at.

Like many other things.. what may suit me might not suit you and
vice-versa.. but these are what I've experienced over the last 3 or so
years with one thing or another.

All the above PFWs were run on win2k for my usage.. my ol' man's laptop
still runs Kerio which I installed for him some time ago and he seems
content with that (no "learning" and all "stealthed").

One to most definitely avoid is ZoneAlarm.. I can DoS a box from a
residential cable connection with a simple nmap (port scan). I was asked
by a couple of friends if I could scan their box after they instaled it to
make sure they were "safe".. both of them disappeared.. one required a
reboot. Again maybe this was box resources / counfiguration.. but I
personally wouldn't trust ZA as far as I could throw it.

Hope you get everything sorted to your personal tastes =)
