I remembered seeing something in
the 2000 setup that mentioned some sort of complications
with that, so i tried the upgrade again to get to that
same part of the setup that mentioned it. I had planned
to abort the setup or cancel it once i knew what it was.
But by upgrading again, i did not come to this page, and
I was simply taken to the setup again.
This makes sense as you are now upgrading 2000 with 2000 and you wouldn't get a hardware incompatibility report at this time. Also
where the keyboard and mouse are detected, so is your monitor. That is why they say your monitor might flicker but it seems you are
freezing and having to restart at this point.
The setup
proceeded to freeze when it got to the screen where it
says hardware detection (like mouse and keyboard)
everytime i try it, it freezes at the exact same spot and
will not let me do anything. I have tried rebooting it
with and without the win 2000 cd, tried booting in
safemode, tried booting to dos prompt, i have tried
everything that i know how to do but it will not do
anything other than boot straight to the setup.
Setup has to complete before you can use safe mode or other startup options that is why it keeps reverting to this stage.
I would
really appreciate any advice on how to possibly exit the
setup so that i can find the conflicting hardware and
disable it. Thank you in advance for any help you have.
You can exit setup by attempting a clean install. Did you say you tried that? It would be hard for you to identify your hardware
with a less than half installed OS. Two things happened that went very wrong for you. Upgrading Me with an older operating system
(MS does not support this) and not getting that hardware message. If it is video, obviously it cannot be disabled.
Suggestion: Open the case or call a friend or someone who is ok with opening the case, pulling out components and slave your drive
in another machine and copy files that you need to keep. Then format the drive either in the other box or back in yours using DOS.
Put Me back on if you still have the CD and product key or try Windows 2000 again with a clean hard drive. However, with Me back on
you can go to your device manager and identify your hardware and then check the hardware compatibility list (HCL) in the link I
posted above. If your video is incompatible, you'll need to get something that is. There is no way I can tell you what hardware is
not installing so don't buy anything until you know for sure. If this is a bit too much ask around for a reputable repair person.
Good luck, I'll check this thread tomorrow.
