I am trying to install Windows XP Home Edition on a notebook, but setup
fails. Usually I get blank screen after selecteding "Press Enter to setup
Windows, Press R to repair". Sometimes it is a blue screen with error message:

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT Stop 0x0..04E (0x0..08F, 0x0..040D3, 0x0..040D7, 0x0).

Or I can get garbage on the screen.

Initially I thought that is is a problem with hardware, but Knoppix starts
without problems and properly recognizes all installed hardware.

I have tried selecting different HAL (KB299340), but the results are as above.

The hard disc is formatted, is not bootable and does not contain Windows.

What should I try next?

Thanks,
Marek

So why not use Linux? If that works, why bother?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have run the memtest and it has not detected any
problems.

Umm, well if it was a desktop I would pull all extra hw and try again, from
the start; delete partitions etc, but its a laptop:(
Since I know nothing about Linux I don't know whether deleting partitions in
the win setup process would have a detrimental effect.

Trying to install XPH on a laptop and get the following:
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT Stop 0x0..04E (0x0..08F, 0x0..040D3, 0x0..040D7, 0x0).

First, you didn't specify the brand/model of laptop. Second you didn't say
if your version of XPH was Retail, OEM or Restore.

My advice, get a disk wiper/diag from the maker of the hard drive in the
laptop.
Use it to wipe the disk and then try the re-install. Don't have any
partitions
when you start the install and partition and format with the XPH cd.

later....
