I'm using Virtual Pc to install the Beta 2 version of Vista. When I try to
install the os after typing in my product key, it gives me the error of "
Setup failed to open the Windows image file" I still have the cd rom
working on the VPC, but it just doesn't seem to work. Any help would be
appreciated. :)

You cannot install Vista by mounting the .iso file on the virtual cd drive.
The limit is of the virtual cd drive is 2.2GB. The main image file alone is
2.8 out of the total. Burn the image to a physical dvd and capture your
physical drive with the drop down menu on the virtual cd drive on the
virtual machine window (with the dvd in the drive).

That's what I already did. But I have a feeling it might be the type of dvd.
Not sure though.

Burn the dvd at the slowest speed you can. Burn speed has caused many
problems, according to MS. Check the type, +R or -R. If possible burn it
the same drive that will be reading it.

Do you think this will work on a DVD RW?

I don't know what else you would use unless you install one of the software
dvd drive emulators..

Colin:
The only good ISO burns that I got to work without corruption were
on DVD+RW disks, DVD+R and DVD-R corrupted from the same image.

Well, I used Virtual PC when trying to install Vista, but when going through
my real computer setup, it works. So, it must be a VPC error. And that would
explain (the dvd+r) why the image MIGHT not work. I used a dvd-r. But I don't
have any +r(w) disks, so if I created a new partition with the vista install,
will my current windows still remain intact?

Yes. You can install from the XP desktop. Just insert the dvd and Setup
will appear. If you reach the screen for picking the target partition and
no partition is available then you will need to provide drivers for the hdd
controller with the Load Drivers button. The drivers may be on floppy, cd,
or thumb drive. I suspect that will not be an issue, but just in case...

When installation is done you will get a boot options screen when you
restart. Vista is the "Microsoft Windows" entry. To rename these entries
and set the default OS to boot, I suggest you use VistaBootPro from
http://www.vistabootpro.org/intro.php

Thank you very much. I'll backup everything I have, and install it. If it's
successfull, I'll let you know, and if not, I'll fix everything, and let you
know again. Lol. thanks!

You're welcome.
