I understand from a previous post that the answer to this problem is to
switch on all services. Is that still the standard solution or is there a
specific service to turn on?

My setup: P4 3Ghz, 1GB RAM, WinXP Pro SR2, Bootmagic 8. I've got a clean
partition FAT32 size 32 GB. Plan to dual boot using Bootmagic unless that is
getting in the way. (It is afterall a Norton product). I've tweaked several
service settings so unless I have to I won't throw the switch on all.

Thoughts?

Vista will not install on a FAT32 partition. Format it as NTFS

Tom,
Thanks. That is just what I needed to hear. I also removed Bootmagic and set
most of my services to auto. Once I converted the partition back to NTFS
Setup liked "this computer." Vista is cruising... Install was smooth.
