I've just burned Vista(64-bit) to dvd, but when I try to run it in windows it
just says
'Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System. To install
Windows please try booting from the install media'

I'm running XP sp2 (32-bit). Can I not upgrade in windows due to my XP
install being 32bit and vista being 64bit or what?? I thought it would just
'work'!!

Correct. You can't upgrade the 32-bit XP to 64-bit Vista because the Vista
installer is 64-bit and won't run in a 32-bit OS.

I had the same issue but Vista will not let me download the 32-bit version,
does anyone have any suggestions?

So I'm running XP 32 bit and want to upgrade to Vista 64. How do I go about
this? I do have an amd64 chip.

You can't, as Tom said. It is not technically feasible.

Alright how about this. I've got a seperate harddrive and I want to put
Vista64 on it. I can't seem to boot off the Vista CD so how should I go about
installing it on this other HD?

Is the ISO you downloaded the 32-bit one, or the 64-bit one? I think
a 64-bit DVD will only upgrade a 64-bit version of XP.

Is the HD internal, or external?

If it's an external drive, Windows Vista (as well as all other Windows
OSes) won't boot from an external drive, although it will start the
installation on an external drive.

If it's an internal HD, I see no reason keeping it from installing
(other than a technical consideration of Vista not installing on a
64bit machine using the 32-bit DVD), IF you have set your internal DVD
drive as the initial boot device, unless you have
a) A bad burn.
b) An "unofficial" ISO (read: "pirated")

By the way, I don't know whether Vista will or won't install on a
machine using an AMD64 chip.

I do know that the Beta 2 DVD distribution kit included both a 32-bit
install DVD as well as a 64-bit install DVD.

And the RC1 distribution kit may also include both 32-bit and 64-bit
DVDs.

I do suspect that it won't boot from an external DVD drive, however.
I don't have an external DVD drive, so I cannot make a definite
statement about that. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
