I'm downloading the new beta and anxious to try it however, I don't want to
mess up my current MS office software or setups. Can I try the beta without
'touching' my current software?

It is pretty much universally recommended that you not install beta software
on a production machine.

Proceed at your own risk.

The Office 2007 Beta will allow you to do a Custom installation, in which
you can choose to Upgrade or Keep your existing Office products, including
FrontPage. However, you cannot have 2 versions of Outlook installed at the
same time.
As Bob said, it is risky running a Beta on a production (or your only)
desktop PC.

I appreciate all your feedback. I've decided not to install the beta at this
time on this production machine.
